Synopsis
Set against the backdrop of 1960s Montreal, TRUE NORTH uncovers two pivotal but underrecognized international events, the 1968 Congress of Black Writers and the Sir George Williams Affair, revealing the city as a vital crossroads in the global Black liberation movement. Through never-before-seen archival footage and intimate first-person testimonies, the film traces interconnected struggles across the Caribbean, Canada, and the United States, exposing the enduring legacies of colonialism and institutional racism. Both an act of remembrance and a call to action, TRUE NORTH restores long-overlooked voices to history while illuminating a movement whose impact continues to resonate today.
Directed by
Filmmaker, artist and author, Michèle Stephenson pulls from her Haitian and Panamanian roots to think radically about storytelling and disrupt the imaginary in non-fiction spaces. She tells emotionally driven personal stories of resistance and identity that are created by, for and about communities of color and the Black diaspora. Her stories intentionally reimagine and provoke thought about how we engage with and dismantle the internalized impact of systems of oppression. She draws on fiction, immersive and hybrid forms of storytelling to build her worlds and narratives.
